  • The main ingredient is Flour! Flour mixed with the yeast, water, onion, and sugar is all you need. The yeast will activate, and will do the rest for you!

  • Cherry Tomatoes are optional as well. They give you the creative aspect to make a design on top of the bread. They are other vegetables as well you can add or even flowers!

  • Slowly add in flour! I suggest adding a half cup at a time whether your using a mixer or by hand.
  • Whisk the water with the yeast and sugar for just a minute. Don’t over whisk the water.
  • When the dough has proofed and has doubled in size, oil your fist before you punch the dough to reduce the dough sticking to your hand.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon of Sugar

  • 1 Tablespoon of Active Dry Yeast

  • 1 1/2 cup warm/room temperature water

  • 2 1/4 cups Flour

  • 2 Teaspoons salt

  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion

  • 1/4 cup Olive Oil

  • 1/4 Cup Fresh Basil or 2 Tablespoons Dry Basil (What I am using)

  • 1/2 Cup Sliced Cherry Tomatoes

Directions

  • Combine the Sugar, Yeast, and Water. Whisk for 1 minute to dissolve the yeast.
  • Stir in the flour 1/2 cup at a time. Using a mixer with a dough hook or by hand.
  • Stir in the Salt and the chopped onion. Mix well, then knead with hand or in the mixer with the dough hook.
  • Place the Dough in a well oiled bowl. Cover bowl with a warm towel for 1-2 hours. Or until it has doubled in size.
  • Oil your fist and punch the fermented dough down. Place the dough on to a well oiled glass baking dish or sheet pan.
  • Drizzle about 2 Tables spoons of Olive oil on top of the dough. Let dough proof in pan for 15 minutes. Preheat the Oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Once dough has rose a more, start to dimple the surface of dough with your fingertips. Sprinkle the basil on top of the surface. Start to decorate the top with cherry tomatoes in any design you want. This recipe is designed with tomato flowers.
  • Bake Focaccia for 20 minutes or until lightly brown on top. Enjoy:))))

Notes

  • Make sure proof dough until doubled in size!
  • If you have a mixer with a dough hook, use it because you will save time and your arm will not be sore.
  • Dipping the bread with a Balsamic, Oil, and oregano mix is amazing for an appetizer after it has cooled down.
  • If your looking for a thicker bread to slice in half for a sandwich, I suggest using a glass baking dish instead of a baking sheet so it can expand up and not out.

  • Does it matter what type of oil you use?

No, you can use any oil. Avocado oil is another great option that is clean.

  • What is the difference in using a glass baking dish and a sheet pan?

Using a smaller glass baking dish, the dough will rise when baked creating a thicker bread. This will take a few extra minutes. When using a sheet pan, the dough will bake toward the edges, creating a thinner bread.

  • Do I need a mixer with a dough hook to make this bread?

No! You can totally use your hand! It will only take a few extra minutes.
